Paranoid and Ready
Emergency Action Plan
Date
First, right now
- 1Are you and everyone with you safe from immediate danger? Move first, think after.
- 2Check for injuries, give help, call emergency services.
- 3Check for gas, smoke, standing water, structural damage. No lights if you smell gas.
- 4Get your bearings. What happened, is it still happening, is it spreading toward you.
Decide: stay or go
- 1Go if: structural damage, gas, fire, rising water, an evacuation order, or the hazard is closing in.
- 2Stay if the hazard has passed, the building is sound, and leaving is riskier than staying.
- 3When unsure and you can still leave safely, leave. Staying wrong is harder to undo than going wrong.
If you are staying
- 1Shut off gas, water or electricity only if you smell gas or see damage to a line.
- 2Account for everyone in the household by name.
- 3Check what food and water you actually have on hand against the Emergency Food Supply Checklist.
- 4Get information from wherever you can: radio, official channels, neighbours, social media.
- 5Send one message to your out-of-area contact: safe, staying, location.
